Rio Tinto Announces US$1.9 Billion Investment in Kangwinan Bauxite Project

October 23, 2026

Rio Tinto has announced a US$1.9 billion investment to develop the Kangwinan bauxite project on Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. The project is designed to expand the company's Weipa operations and help maintain long-term bauxite production as existing mining areas mature.

According to Rio Tinto's official announcement, Kangwinan is expected to add approximately 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity. First ore output is targeted for 2029, with full production expected by 2032.

The development includes a new mining area, a conveyor system and expanded stockyard and port infrastructure connected to the existing Amrun operation. Construction is expected to ramp up in 2027, creating more than 1,300 jobs during the construction phase.

Supporting Australia's Bauxite Industry

The Kangwinan project reflects continued investment in Australia's mineral resources sector. Developing new mining areas and supporting infrastructure can help sustain production as established operations approach the end of their planned operating lives.

For the wider mining industry, projects of this scale also highlight the importance of reliable ore characterization and quality control. Sampling and laboratory testing help mining teams assess material properties at different stages of exploration, mine development and production.

Laboratory sample preparation equipment, including jaw crushers, sample dividers and pulverizers, supports the preparation of mineral samples for analysis. Equipment requirements vary according to sample characteristics, testing methods and laboratory throughput.
